Causes of Pain During Intercourse
Here are the Major causes of vaginal pain during sex as per this except from an article found in onlymyhealth.com blog
A dry vagina is the chief cause of vaginal pain, and one of the common practices to reduce vaginal pain during intercourse is to keep the lining of the vagina lubricated. The vagina can be lubricated by using water based lubricants such as K-Y jelly. Have sex with your partner, only when you are aroused.
A study was conducted on the reasons for pain during intercourse by the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre and University of Montreal in October, 2010. The researchers surveyed 191 couples and it was revealed that most of the respondents experienced pain one time or another during intercourse. Delhi based expert sexologist, Dr. Chandan Choudhary advises, “The main cause of vaginal pain during intercourse is having intercourse in dry vagina which should not be done”. He adds, “Avoid intercourse until the woman is sexually aroused” which is the perfect answer of the question how to overcome pain during intercourse.
Steps to Overcome Pain during Intercourse
- You and your partner need to indulge in foreplay before sex. In many cases, foreplay is helpful in sexually arousing the couple, thereby eliminating the possibility of a dry vagina, which is most important to avoid pain during intercourse.
- Find a good gynecologist and discuss the problem. The doctor will probably ask you to go for some laboratory tests. The common causes of such kind of pain include endometriosis, a tipped uterus, infections, drug side effects, and hormonal imbalances. If you do not get the answer from your doctor, do further research on the internet or read related journals.
- Ask your close friends or relatives if they face similar pain during intercourse and try to find a solution.
- Try to find out other ways to keep each other sexually happy until you solve the problem. Sexual intimacy is very important after marriage but intimacy is not limited to intercourse alone.
- Remember, this is a temporary problem. Take it as a challenge, discover new methods of intimacy and exercise patience.
- It is important to follow the instructions of your doctor and identify the exact cause of a dry vagina, which may include a bacterial infection or vaginismus.
- The husband needs to adjust with his wife and it is very important for him not to force his wife for sex.

I have tried all the treatments and tests described previously. I have also taken a break from sex for over a week.Accepted Answer
Dr. Owen :
Hello, and I am pleased to help, use of my answers are for educational purposes only.
Dr. Owen :
Hello
Dr. Owen :
Do you use birth control?
Dr. Owen :
How long has this been going on – months, years???
Customer :
It started in March. I don’t use any birth control. My partner is “fixed”.
Dr. Owen :
How often to do you have this pain – just certain times of the month – or just anytime you have sex?
Customer :
every time we have had sex since late March, but I only bleed sometimes, more frequently lately.
Dr. Owen :
do you use birth control at all?
Dr. Owen :
Do you have medical problems?
Dr. Owen :
What is your height and weight?
Customer :
no because he cannot get me pregnant since he’s been “fixed” and we are committed. I am 5 8 and weigh about 152. I have a thyroid problem and no other health issues.
Dr. Owen :
Thank you
Dr. Owen :
Well this could be due to a few things – and it sounds like you have been treated for PID
Dr. Owen :
So, this could be due to ‘Scar’ tissue which could cause the pain – but not cause the bleeding.
Dr. Owen :
This could be due to Endometriosis – and hence given what you have been going through you could see if birth control helps such as pills, the Nuvaring, or the OrthEvra Patch.
Customer :
the pain is really only deep inside. It hurts somewhat like cramps. It hurts to sit straight and it hurts to go # X but not #1
Dr. Owen :
But, to really get a good diagnosis – you might need a Laparoscopic procedure – because you might have endometriosis throughout your pelvis and you might have scar tissue (also known as adhesions).
Dr. Owen :
This does sounds like endometriosis.
Dr. Owen :
Now after the birth control options
Customer :
I have bad side effects with the patch and nuva ring and the pill. Why would I suddenly develop endometriosis? I have had two healthy babies already
Dr. Owen :
GnRH – agonisits – such as Depo Lupron can help too – so you should get this evaluated.
Dr. Owen :
Well it is not a matter of ALL of a sudden….it can happen at any time in a fertile time in a woman’s life.
Customer :
what is GnRH?
Dr. Owen :
So, it really is possible.
Dr. Owen :
Oh – GnRH – Gonadotropin Releasling Hormone
Customer :
if it is endo. causing the pan, then what could be causing the bleeding? The Dr said my cervix was fryable??? why is it fryable and why now? and what can I do to make unfryable?
Dr. Owen :
Depo Lupron can help by decreasing the endometrial implants that might be causing the pain.
Dr. Owen :
The bleeding could be the endo
Dr. Owen :
But the bleeding could be just cervical bleeding
Dr. Owen :
It could be a polyp too
Customer :
wouldn’t the doctor have seen that when she examined me?
Dr. Owen :
So doing ‘surgery’ just to LOOK in the uterus/ cervix and also inside the pelvis might just give you and answer so that it can be treated
Dr. Owen :
No, not necessarily so – the doctor might not see without LOOKING with scopes
Customer :
I see… so I need surgery.
Dr. Owen :
Well really to LOOK
Dr. Owen :
and if you have scar tissue (adhesions) in the pelvis which can cause a lot of pain – during the Laparoscopy you can get this taken care of
Dr. Owen :
A really GOOD ob/gyn can take care of this…
Customer :
OK I wondered too if it was because of my partner. He’s on the larger side and I thought maybe he was causing the pain and irritation
Dr. Owen :
are you seeing an ob/gyn for this ?
Dr. Owen :
Well it could be if this is a ‘new’ partner that is larger than what your vagina is use to
Customer :
I did on several occasions see a doctor — maybe three or four times since March
Customer :
Yes, he is relatively new. Since Feb
Dr. Owen :
but is he an ob/gyn?
Dr. Owen :
that makes a big difference
Customer :
Yes only OB/GYN doctors
Dr. Owen :
good
Customer :
Is there a certain angle I can encourage which will make him not hurt me?
Dr. Owen :
your next step – you should consider this Laparoscopic procedure to Look inside of you
Dr. Owen :
Well usually the standard position for most people with him on top hurts the least for most.
Dr. Owen :
I hope this helps.
Dr. Owen :
Thank you
Customer :
But I’m afraid to do this procedure if the issue is just my partner
Dr. Owen :
well then Have your doctor specifically LOOK in your vagina for lacerations – but USUALLY this does not occur with DEEP pain in your pelvix.
Dr. Owen :
pelvix.
Dr. Owen :
pelvis.
Customer :
ok. thanks
Dr. Owen :
So, the option is also just to do a TRIAL of Depo LUPRON injection for three monthsYou can read about it here
